The Larkmead wine collection includes four prominent labels and each wine presents distinct portraits of the large and varied estate. The Larkmead Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is assembled from a range of blocks, blending all of the many soil types and clonal selections together into a single complex whole. The Larkmead Firebelle Estate Red Wine is a traditional Bordeaux style blend, prominently featuring Merlot. The Larkmead Lillie Estate Sauvignon Blanc is crafted in tiny quantities and displays truly distinct character of the varietal when grown in our warmer Calistoga location. The flagship wine is the Larkmead Solari Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted from blocks that best capture the balance and purity of the estate vineyard. The Larkmead Solari Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic expression of Napa Valley Cabernet with notes of bramble, violets, and baking spices that are signatures of the storied Larkmead estate.
Throughout the years, Larkmead Vineyards has produced a handful of wines for a limited number of vintages, such as LMV Salon Estate Red Blend, Dr. Olmo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and The Lark. These bottlings showcase the diversity of terroir across the storied estate, when a given vintage blesses the vineyards with distinct fruit deserving of bottling on its own.

1936 Special Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Immediately following the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, Larkmead was one of the first wineries in America to capitalize on the demand of varietal-labeled wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon. Previously, American wines had been labeled without any indication of the grapes used in the blend with titles like ‘Red Burgundy’, ‘Claret’ or ‘Chablis’. This Special Reserve label from 1936 is our earliest glimpse of Larkmead Cabernet Sauvignon and was used as inspiration for our current ‘Black Label’ offerings.

The Historic Larkmead Medals
“My grandmother’s property ran along the edge of the Larkmead red barn. Late one night, I crawled through a loose window and found all of the wine medals my family had won when we owned Larkmead. The next day, I took myself to the home of Larry Solari, and sheepishly asked him if I could have the boxes of medals. Mr. Solari seemed a bit bemused that a 15-year-old wanted old wine awards, but he said sure. The wine medals have followed me to my various houses, and last year a number of the medals and oldest ribbons were returned on loan to Larkmead Vineyards, almost six decades after I found them.

1936 California State Fair
The California State Fair ran from September 5 to 14, 1936 in Sacramento. During the ten day celebration, the whole state joined to exult in the bounty of California. Visitors were delighted by floats, demonstrations, cooking and craft exhibitions, a menagerie of livestock as well as horse races, and many forms of live music and performances. Larkmead Vineyards, under the ownership of F. Salmina and Co., was awarded a bronze medal for the Cabernet Sauvignon.
