"The 2008 Syrah is a powerhouse effort from front to finish. The grapes for this wine were harvested on September 8 after a blistering heat wave that tallied eight 100F degree days in the span of 11. Thus the dense, concentrated nose and body will benefit from aeration for about an hour in its youth before it begins to truly reveal itself. In the glass, the wine is ripe with blueberry and blackberry purity. The earthiness of these fruits weighs down a deep violet aromatic. While the wine lingers in the glass, you'll find a touch of sweet, palatable créme finishing the profile. The wine enters the mouth extremely broad and textured. Gripping tannins continue to carry blackberry flavors through the palate and funnel through the finish with a refreshing counter balance of baker's chocolate bitterness. The bitterness lasts momentarily as the tannins drip away leaving high-octane sweetness that releases layers of nuanced floral, white and black pepper spice within each sip. It is easy to get caught up in the wine's unbending power in its youth but the patient drinker will find the structure unveil itself to expose a complex and evolving red wine that will be enjoyed over the next five to seven years."
