The 2012 Lillie Sauvignon Blanc has an immediate sense of weight and texture on the nose with aromas of lemon oil and honey blossom. The weight of the aromas loosen up as the secondary floral notes bounce from lemon grass and fresh cut flowers to dried hay and finish, subtly and citrusy, with a tangerine zest. On the palate the wine has a broad and buoyant weight that adds a touch of apricot and mango to the complex flavor profile. The finish is juicy and fresh with a lingering salinity that lightens the weight of the wine. The restraint, the depth and the freshness evident in the wines aromas and texture, makes us believe that the 2012 vintage will be considered one of the Estate's finest.
Harvested at the end of August 2012, our Sauvignon Blanc vines that surround the tasting room had one of their healthiest growing seasons from grape to glass. The mild growing conditions during the year included a cool start to the summer before an early heat spike in August that pushed maturation and flavor development in the grapes and helped create a more viscous wine. Cooler temperatures prevailed in the second half of August and allowed for the grapes to maintain their aromatic intensity and freshness. In the cellar the wine is aged on its lees in oak for 11 months, a time longer than the typical for Sauvignon Blanc which really enhances the wine’s weight and in turn gravitas in the glass. With an additional nine months of bottle age before release the wine is ready to drink immediately but the wine’s overall balance will allow Lillie to maintain its poise for another 5 years. Please note, this richer style of Sauvignon Blanc truly benefits from being served at cellar temperatures to allow for its nuance, complexity and texture to reveal itself.
